Silver SP
Well, the other week i was made an offer i couldnt refuse. The offer was to buy another Olympus SP, but this time in Silver, for a very reasonable price. Actually, an extremely reasonable price. I wasnt in the market for another camera, let alone another SP, but somehow i convinced myself i should get another one. =/
The SP on offer came with its original case and manual, but the best bit was that it had just undergone a CLA, plus it had a modification that allows it to take modern voltage batteries without any stuffing around. These two things alone would of cost more than what i ended up buying the camera for, so i was pretty pleased. I was about to send my black SP in for a CLA anyway, so this saved me the hassle, plus i can now leave it at home and not worry about scratching the thing (well thats how i justified the purchase). The silver one is now my user, eventhough it is cosmetically and functionally flawless. (I would of been happy wich a scratched up user, but who am i to complain?)
So anyway, heres a quick picture of them together below :

having 2 of the same film cameras isn’t such a crazy idea in my opinion, especially if they’re cheap
load one with 100 iso and the other with 800 (or 1 B&W + 1 colour) and bingo u never have to worry about which film to load.
nice photo btw. was gonna say in a previous post it might be worth hanging a white sheet behind you and see if it reduces the reflections in the lenses of the cameras.
might even be able to cut a whole in cardboard or a sheet and sticking your lens through it.
Cheers mate. I think i have bit of a collecting “addiction” though. I just like old quality stuff. Its even better when you can use it and still produce results that rival modern equipment. Plus i like the whole thrill of searching and finding stuff when you get a good deal.
I considered loading them up with two different films (i do that with a couple OM SLR bodies i have), but in this instance i’ll retire the black one to the shelf for the moment. The last SP sold in Australia on ebay went for $255 (silver in neat but not perfect condition), and the black ones have in the past gone for double the amount of the silver bodies. I’d just be annoyed if i dropped the thing during a clumsy moment as i’d never be able to get a replacement. Well i could, but it’d cost me about 6 times what i payed for mine unfortunately. I know its not in the Leica price range, but i dont have the money to be throwing around unfortantely haha.
Its funny how market forces work with cameras though. Since i’ve been into them, i’ve noticed alot of huge increases when cameras reach “cult” status, but alot of better cameras stay stagnent. I try to stay clear of the cult stuff, but they’ve seemed to follow me a bit. When i first started getting OM’s they were pretty cheap and affordable, same with these SP’s, oh and the little Oympus Trips that are going for 20 times the amount they were 9 months ago (a grand total of $25 now, haha).
I’m going to try that white sheet suggestion you gave me, thanks. With this shot actually, i didnt take it with my homemade light box. I just sat the camers on a white piece of cardboard infront of a window then put another piece behind them. Set up the camera and over exposed it a bit to blend in the background. It turned out alot better than i thought. No artificial flashes or lighting at all
wow! the price of the sp is so expensive!! haha
but two very sexy cameras though
Thanks David
The SP’s do seem to be getting more expensive, especially in Australia. They may of reached cult status amongst some people which has increased the price a bit.
They’re still very nice cameras to use and can produce some amazing results with their fast and sharp lens.
I just search to get one, a preference to 35 spn.
I just splurged on one on Ebay that was buy it now $55.00, photos of it werea bit fuzzy but hopefully worth the risk at the price. Anything I should be aware of with this cutie? I’ve enjoyed a 35RC for years, this is my 1st venture with the faster lens, which seems to have a great reputation on the web.
